Simply put, it cuts down reflected glare by turning Mirror-like reflections into soft, diffused light – which makes a huge difference for displays, car dashboards, and industrial touchscreens where visual comfort matters.

The Gloss Balancing Act

Gloss isn't just a standalone number – it's the pivot point that ties everything else together, and here's the trade-off we see every day in production:

1 The 60-degree angle test shows that gloss is inversely proportional to haze. The higher the gloss, the lower the haze. Gloss is directly proportional to clarity. The higher the gloss, the higher the clarity.

2 The gloss is directly proportional to the number of highlights. The lower the gloss, the lower the number of highlights. When the particle size matches the display pixel, the roughness will increase. A rougher surface can enhance the diffusion of light. The fewer the highlights, the higher the resolution requirements for the next generation of displays. The highlights will be given more importance.

3 Gloss is inversely proportional to roughness. In the same piece of glass, the lower the gloss, the higher the roughness. Rougher surfaces can increase light diffusion and reduce luster. Increasing roughness can reduce the number of sparkle. However, it does not mean that increasing roughness will definitely reduce the sparkle; because sparkle can also be caused by other reasons.

To summarize, lower gloss means higher roughness and more haze, which gives you that paper-like, anti-glare feel. Great for outdoor or brightly lit environments.

Higher gloss brings back the smoothness, cuts haze down, and boosts clarity – but it also increases sparkle (those tiny bright specks), which some applications find distracting.

In practice, if you go for a glossy finish around 110°, you'll get crystal-clear images but may notice some sparkle under direct light. Drop it down to 35°, and you'll get a solid anti-glare surface with a nice tactile touch, though you sacrifice a bit of sharpness.
